The TMC MP alleged that Madan Mitra’s decision to join the rebel camp was influenced by the ED summons issued to his family, a claim he denied.
July 15, 2026: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday criticised senior leader Madan Mitra after he joined the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee. Speaking in Kolkata, Moitra alleged that Mitra’s decision was linked to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summons issued to his family members in connection with a money-laundering investigation related to an alleged municipal recruitment scam in West Bengal.
Moitra claimed that Mitra’s political shift came immediately after the ED summoned his wife and sons for questioning, suggesting that the move was made under pressure. She also pointed out what she described as a sudden change in his stance, noting that Mitra had recently criticised the rebel faction before joining it.
Madan Mitra, however, rejected the allegation and maintained that his decision to switch camps had no connection with the ED action against his family. The former TMC minister said he had “only changed my room in the Assembly” while formally joining the Ritabrata Banerjee-led rebel group, further deepening the political divide within the Trinamool Congress.
