Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The political situation in Tamil Nadu remains fluid after the recent assembly elections. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, emerged as the single largest party by securing 108 seats. However, this total falls short of the required majority of 118 seats in the 234-member legislative assembly. Consequently, the party must secure additional support to form the government.
AIADMK Rejects Alliance Proposals
Amidst the ongoing negotiations, the AIADMK has officially denied any possibility of a post-poll alliance with TVK. A senior party official issued a clear statement dismissing reports of a potential partnership as “entirely false.” The AIADMK has firmly ruled out extending support to Vijay’s party under any circumstances.
Congress Extends Conditional Support
The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has decided to extend its support to TVK for government formation. Having secured five seats in the election, the Congress party views its contribution as vital for achieving a majority. Nevertheless, this backing comes with a specific condition. Congress leadership stated that their support is contingent upon TVK refusing to include any “communal forces” that do not uphold the Constitution of India.
Tensions Within the DMK-Congress Alliance
This decision has created friction within the former DMK-led alliance. DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan publicly criticized the Congress party for its pivot toward TVK. He argued that since Congress contested the election against TVK, shifting allegiances now is a betrayal of the voters’ mandate. Elangovan emphasized that Congress performed poorly in the polls and is now failing to accept the election results.
Status of Government Formation
While there have been reports suggesting that an oath-taking ceremony for Vijay could take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, significant uncertainty persists. Because the TVK is still short of the required majority, the schedule for the formation of the government remains unconfirmed. Both the public and political observers are waiting for further developments as TVK works to secure the necessary legislative support.
