The Maharashtra government is preparing to roll out its ambitious Pink E-Rickshaw Scheme across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The initiative aims to encourage women entrepreneurship by helping women own and operate electric rickshaws while also strengthening last-mile public transport.

The scheme will focus on safe and less congested routes to ensure smooth operations without adding pressure to existing traffic.

Pink E-Rickshaws to Operate on Selected Routes

To ensure efficient implementation, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has instructed officials from the Transport Department, Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) and Traffic Police to identify suitable routes for the electric rickshaws.

The selected routes will mainly include internal roads, wider streets and important connectivity corridors where traffic is relatively light.

However, the pink e-rickshaws will not be allowed to operate on highways, arterial roads or major traffic intersections. The decision has been taken to avoid traffic congestion and ensure passenger safety.

The scheme will cover several areas across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Mumbai suburbs, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Vasai-Virar and Kalyan-Dombivli.

Women to Receive 40% Government Subsidy

One of the biggest highlights of the scheme is the revised financial assistance offered to beneficiaries.

The Maharashtra government has increased its subsidy from 20% to 40% of the vehicle’s cost, making it easier for women to purchase electric rickshaws.

Under the new funding model:

  • 40% of the vehicle cost will be covered by the Maharashtra government.
  • 50% will be financed through a bank loan.
  • 10% will be contributed by the beneficiary.

The increased subsidy is expected to reduce the financial burden on women entrepreneurs and encourage greater participation in the scheme.

GPS Tracking to Improve Passenger Safety

The government is also planning to introduce several safety measures for the Pink E-Rickshaw Scheme.

Every vehicle will be equipped with a GPS-based tracking system to improve passenger safety and enable better monitoring of operations.

Additionally, officials are expected to hold discussions with vehicle manufacturers to improve battery performance, driving range and vehicle speed. These upgrades aim to make the electric rickshaws more reliable for daily urban travel.

Scheme Aims to Promote Green Mobility and Women’s Employment

The Pink E-Rickshaw Scheme is part of Maharashtra’s broader effort to promote sustainable transport while creating employment opportunities for women.

By encouraging the use of electric vehicles, the government hopes to reduce pollution and improve first-mile and last-mile connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Officials believe the initiative will provide women with a stable source of income while offering commuters a cleaner and more convenient transport option.

The government is expected to announce additional operational details once route identification and implementation planning are completed.
