New Delhi: In a significant political upset, Mamata Banerjee lost her long-held Bhabanipur seat to Suvendu Adhikari in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The defeat comes despite Banerjee’s confident assertion in March that she would retain the constituency “even if by a single vote.” Contrary to that claim, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief was defeated by a margin of 15,114 votes.
A Symbolic and Political Setback for TMC
Bhabanipur has long been considered a stronghold of Banerjee, making this loss both symbolically and politically significant. The constituency had been central to her political journey, and the result reflects a shifting voter sentiment in the state.
BJP Gains Momentum in Bengal
Adhikari’s victory is being seen as a major boost for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has made aggressive inroads into West Bengal politics over recent years. The win further strengthens BJP’s position in the state, especially amid broader electoral gains reported across constituencies.
What This Means Going Forward
Banerjee’s defeat in Bhabanipur raises key questions about the future leadership dynamics within the TMC and the party’s strategy moving forward. For the BJP, the win marks not just an electoral gain but also a symbolic breakthrough in a region historically dominated by its rival.
