The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday. The forecast has sparked speculation about whether schools and colleges would remain closed, especially in low-lying areas that are prone to waterlogging.
However, no civic authority has announced a holiday for educational institutions so far.
As of now, schools and colleges in Mumbai are expected to function normally unless a fresh advisory is issued by local authorities.
No School Closure Announcement By Civic Bodies
Several civic authorities have clarified that no official order has been issued regarding the closure of schools or colleges.
There has been no announcement or advisory from:
- Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)
- Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC)
- Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC)
- Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)
Students, parents and educational institutions have been advised to follow only official updates issued by the concerned civic bodies.
IMD Warns Of Heavy Rain And Strong Winds
The southwest monsoon has regained momentum over Mumbai and neighbouring districts after a brief break, bringing widespread rainfall since the weekend.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Tuesday.
In addition, gusty winds of 50 to 60 kmph are likely to accompany the rain.
After Tuesday, a yellow alert for heavy rainfall will remain in effect on July 22 and July 23, indicating continued wet weather across the region.
Rainfall Varied Across Mumbai Region
Rainfall distribution remained uneven across Mumbai and nearby areas during the past 24 hours.
According to IMD data recorded until 8:30 am on Monday:
- Colaba: 5.6 mm rainfall
- Santacruz: 88.4 mm rainfall
- Thane: 115 mm rainfall
- Navi Mumbai: 92.1 mm average rainfall
The figures show that while some parts of the city received light showers, neighbouring areas experienced much heavier rainfall.
Monsoon Has Returned To Normal July Pattern
Independent weather forecaster Abhijit Modak said the revival of the southwest monsoon has restored the typical July weather conditions across the Konkan region.
As a result, the region is once again witnessing intermittent rain, overcast skies and cooler daytime temperatures after last week’s relatively warmer weather.
The renewed rainfall is expected to continue over the next few days.
Mumbai’s Water Storage Improves
The recent spell of rain has also increased water levels in Mumbai’s reservoirs.
The city’s seven lakes, which supply drinking water, now hold 7.82 lakh million litres, representing 54.05% of their total storage capacity.
Although reservoir levels have improved, they remain significantly lower than the 82.07% recorded during the same period last year.
Therefore, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to continue the existing 10% water cut until water storage improves further.
Residents are advised to remain alert, avoid waterlogged areas during heavy rainfall and monitor official updates from the IMD and local civic authorities for any changes in weather warnings or school operations.
