Noida remained on edge for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, as factory workers continued their agitation despite the state government’s late-night attempt to defuse the situation with a wage hike. Although the scale of the demonstrations was smaller than Monday’s city-wide paralysis, pockets of Phase 2 witnessed fresh bouts of stone-pelting and vandalism.

The rift between labor demands and government concessions has widened, with workers calling the new figures a “mockery” of current inflation levels.

The Government’s “Interim” Solution
Deepak Kumar, the UP Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner (IIDC), confirmed a 21% hike in minimum wages for Noida and Ghaziabad. However, the administration clarified that these are interim revised wages intended to restore order.

Finality: The permanent wage structure will be decided by a wage board next month.

Deadline: The public has until April 23 to submit objections or suggestions regarding the new pay scale.

Why the Protests Continued on Tuesday
Despite the announcement, workers hit the streets in Sectors 70, 74, and 80 starting around 9:00 AM. Their grievances are three-fold:

The Gap: Workers are demanding a 35% hike to match neighboring Haryana, arguing that 21% does not cover the surging cost of food and rent in the NCR.

Lack of Notification: Many protesters claimed they had received no formal word from their employers and feared the announcement was a mere tactic to break the strike.

Economic Hardship: Long-term workers, like Sangeeta from Phase 2, pointed out that after paying nearly ₹8,000 in rent from a ₹13,000 salary, survival on the remaining balance is nearly impossible.

Police Crackdown and “Conspiracy” Probe
Security forces maintained a heavy presence to prevent a repeat of Monday’s total gridlock. Gautam Budh Nagar Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh reported that 396 people have been arrested so far, including individuals who are not factory employees.

Vandalism: A police bus was damaged in Sector 80, and stone-pelting was reported at several factory gates.

The “Outsider” Angle: Authorities are investigating if “outside elements” are instigating the workers, following the state government’s earlier claims of potential Pakistan-linked handlers or “Naxal revival” attempts.

Warning to Contractors: District Magistrate Medha Roopam warned labor contractors that they would be held personally accountable for the actions of their workers, facing potential blacklisting or license cancellation.

Industry in Peril
Factory owners expressed deep concern over the hike, citing a “triple whammy” of economic pressures:

Global Factors: Increased U.S. tariffs and the high cost of oil due to the ongoing U.S.-Iran war.

Sustainability: Industry leaders argue that forced wage hikes following violent protests set a dangerous precedent and may lead to factory closures.

Political Reaction
The unrest has caught national attention, with Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, backing the workers. In a post on X, he described the Noida events as the “final cry of this nation’s workers” and criticized the government for viewing the labor force as a “burden.”
