Over 5.73 crore citizens are heading to the polls today to choose from 4,023 candidates in the highly anticipated Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Amidst a massive security crackdown and strict monitoring to prevent voter bribery, the state is bracing for a historic democratic showdown.

The high-stakes battle primarily features a direct clash between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is campaigning vigorously to keep his seat. On the other side, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami is working hard to bring his party back to power after five years in the opposition.

Voter Demographics and Election Preparedness

Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Archana Patnaik confirmed that the state has completed all preparations for this massive exercise. Furthermore, the authorities have ensured that every polling station is equipped to handle the summer heat and high voter turnout.

Total Voters: 5.73 crore

Women Voters: 2.93 crore

Men Voters: 2.83 crore

Third-Gender Voters: 7,728

First-Time Voters: 14,59,039

Because of the high number of young, first-time voters, social media campaigns have played a vital role in this assembly elections cycle. Consequently, both major alliances have spent heavily on digital outreach to capture the youth vote.

International Observers Monitor the Process

The significance of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections has drawn global attention. Therefore, delegates from the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP) 2026 are currently in the state to observe the polling.

A total of 34 delegates from 17 different countries are participating in this program. These representatives include members of foreign missions in New Delhi and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance. In addition to observing the technical side of voting, they will also evaluate the security measures implemented by the Election Commission.

Security and Anti-Corruption Measures

To ensure a fair contest, election authorities have launched a massive crackdown on illegal inducements. Specifically, flying squads have been deployed across all 234 constituencies to stop the flow of cash and gifts. Since the assembly elections were announced, officials have seized record amounts of undocumented assets.
