Ahmedabad’s 2030 Commonwealth Games Venues On Track, Key Sports Facilities Expected By 2029

Preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad are progressing steadily, with organisers confirming that major sports infrastructure projects are on track to be completed well before the tournament begins.

Key venues, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and the Gujarat Police Academy, are expected to host several marquee events during the Games.

Officials said the major facilities are scheduled to be completed between 2028 and 2029, allowing adequate time for testing and operational readiness before the multi-sport event.

SVP Sports Enclave To Become Main Commonwealth Games Hub

Spread across 335 acres, the SVP Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad is set to emerge as the central venue for multiple events during the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The complex already houses the world-famous Narendra Modi Stadium, which can accommodate more than one lakh spectators and is expected to host the cricket competition during the Games.

Several new facilities are currently under development within the sports enclave, including:

  • Aquatics Centre
  • Tennis Complex
  • Multipurpose Arena
  • National Institute for Sports Excellence (NISE)

Aquatics Venue To Be Ready By 2029

The upcoming aquatics centre, which will host swimming and other water sports events, is expected to have a seating capacity of 12,000 spectators.

According to officials, construction is progressing as planned and the venue is likely to be completed by the second quarter of 2029.

Massive Tennis And Multipurpose Arenas Under Construction

The new tennis facility being developed within the enclave will have a capacity of 24,000 spectators and is scheduled for completion during the third quarter of 2029.

Alongside it, a multipurpose indoor arena capable of hosting 18,000 spectators is also under development and is expected to be ready during the same period.

The infrastructure expansion is part of Gujarat’s broader effort to establish Ahmedabad as a global sporting destination.

Athletics Stadium And Shooting Centre Coming Up In Karai

The Gujarat Police Academy in Karai near Gandhinagar will serve as another major Commonwealth Games venue.

A 50,000-capacity athletics stadium is being developed at the academy and is expected to be completed by September 2028.

The academy will also feature a state-of-the-art shooting centre with both indoor and outdoor ranges and a seating capacity of 4,000 spectators.

Officials said the shooting facility is targeted for completion by March 2029.

India Likely To Push For Shooting, Hockey And Badminton

The 2030 Commonwealth Games are expected to feature 17 disciplines.

India has expressed interest in ensuring the inclusion of sports such as:

  • Shooting
  • Badminton
  • Hockey

These events were dropped from the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games as part of cost-cutting measures.

Officials clarified that the final allocation of sports and venues will be decided by the Commonwealth Sport in coordination with the Indian Olympic Association and the Gujarat government.

“It is a team effort. You will get to know which sports will be held where in the future,” said Bhaumik Oza, administrative head of the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, which is expected to host weightlifting events.

Commonwealth Games Day To Be Celebrated Across India

India will celebrate Commonwealth Games Day on Sunday across 8,000 locations, with the main event scheduled in Ahmedabad.

The 75th edition of the Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative will be organised in the spirit of the Commonwealth Games movement, promoting fitness, unity and sportsmanship.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi are expected to lead the Ahmedabad event.

Sporting Stars To Participate In Ahmedabad Event

Several prominent Indian athletes and celebrities are expected to attend the celebration, including:

  • Trupti Murgunde
  • Ayushmann Khurrana
  • Gurjit Kaur
  • Rajani Etimarpu
  • Ankur Mittal

A special Commonwealth Games-themed exhibition showcasing India’s sporting achievements over the past 12 years will also be inaugurated during the event.
