Alexander Zverev kept his dream of winning a first Grand Slam title alive after securing a convincing victory over Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar in the French Open quarter-finals.
The second seed produced an experienced and composed performance to defeat the 19-year-old 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 6-3 and advance to the semi-finals at French Open.
With several top contenders already eliminated, Zverev is now the highest-ranked player remaining in the men’s singles draw.
Zverev Moves Closer to First Grand Slam Title
For years, Zverev has been regarded as one of the most talented players on the ATP Tour. However, a Grand Slam trophy has continued to elude him.
The German has reached three major finals and seven semi-finals but has yet to lift one of tennis’ biggest prizes.
His most painful defeat came at the 2024 French Open, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz despite leading by two sets to one.
Now, the 29-year-old has another opportunity to challenge for the title in Paris.
Speaking after the match, Zverev made it clear that his focus remains on the bigger goal.
“I want to keep going and win the matches ahead of me. That is my goal and my aim,” he said.
Rafael Jodar Shows Promise Despite Defeat
The quarter-final was expected to test Zverev against one of Spain’s rising talents.
Jodar started brightly and even broke serve to lead 5-2 in the opening set. However, nerves appeared to affect the teenager as he attempted to close out the set.
Zverev quickly took advantage, leveling the score before dominating the tie-break.
From that point onward, the German controlled the match and gave his young opponent very few opportunities.
Although Jodar exited the tournament, his run to the quarter-finals has strengthened his reputation as one of tennis’ most exciting young prospects.
Jakub Mensik Defeats Joao Fonseca
Zverev will next face Czech star Jakub Mensik, who continued his impressive breakthrough season with a straight-sets win over Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca.
Mensik secured a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final.
The match showcased two of the brightest young talents in men’s tennis. Both players are widely viewed as future contenders for major titles and potential challengers to stars like Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Mensik Holds His Nerve in Dramatic Third Set
While Mensik looked comfortable during the opening two sets, Fonseca fought hard to force a comeback.
The Brazilian, who had already recovered from two-set deficits twice during the tournament, pushed the third set to its limit.
Fonseca saved six match points while serving at 5-6 and eventually forced a tie-break. Nevertheless, Mensik remained calm under pressure and closed out the match in impressive fashion.
After the victory, the Czech player praised the quality of the contest and his ability to stay focused during crucial moments.
Historic Achievement for Czech Tennis
Mensik’s run has already secured him a place in Czech tennis history.
He became the first Czech man to reach a Grand Slam singles semi-final since Tomas Berdych reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2017.
The result is also expected to move Mensik back into the world’s top 20 rankings.
With a place in the French Open final at stake, tennis fans can now look forward to a fascinating semi-final between the experienced Zverev and the rising Czech star.
