Australia began their three-match T20I series against Bangladesh with a convincing four-wicket victory on Wednesday, thanks to a dominant bowling performance led by spinners Adam Zampa and Joel Davies. The win also marked a historic moment as India-born cricketer Nikhil Chaudhary made his T20 International debut for Australia.
Bangladesh were bowled out for 131 in 19 overs after Australia’s spin attack dismantled the middle order. Zampa and debutant left-arm spinner Joel Davies claimed three wickets each, while Chaudhary chipped in with a wicket on his first appearance for the national side.
Joel Davies Impresses on Debut
Davies enjoyed a memorable debut, finishing with three wickets and playing a key role in Australia’s victory. Speaking after the match, the young spinner described the occasion as a dream come true.
“I thought it might be spinning a little bit more than it actually did, but to still get enough out of the wicket… it’s been a childhood dream to play for Australia in any format,” Davies said.
“To get that done today was a massive achievement for me.”
Nikhil Chaudhary Creates History
The match also saw Nikhil Chaudhary become the first India-born male cricketer in six decades to represent Australia. The spinner marked the milestone by taking a wicket during Bangladesh’s innings as Australia’s slow bowlers dominated the contest.
Bangladesh Collapse After Bright Start
Bangladesh, captained by Towhid Hridoy after regular skipper Litton Das was ruled out with a calf injury, elected to bat first after winning the toss.
The hosts got off to a promising start and were comfortably placed at 39 for 1 in the fifth over. However, Australia’s spinners quickly seized control.
Zampa and Davies triggered a dramatic collapse as Bangladesh lost seven wickets for just 60 runs. The batting lineup struggled to cope with the disciplined spin bowling, eventually getting bowled out for 131 with one over remaining.
Cooper Connolly Anchors Australia’s Chase
Chasing 132, Australia suffered an early setback when captain Mitchell Marsh, returning after missing the ODI series due to an ankle injury, and Josh Inglis departed in quick succession.
Cooper Connolly once again stepped up for the visitors. Fresh from his match-winning 149 in the final ODI that helped Australia avoid a clean sweep, Connolly produced another composed innings.
The left-hander scored 47 runs, striking four boundaries and three sixes, while adding a crucial 40-run partnership with Tim David, who contributed 20 runs.
Bangladesh debutant Abdul Gaffar provided some resistance with the ball, dismissing Connolly and finishing with figures of 2 for 32. However, Australia’s batting depth ensured there were no major hiccups as they reached 133 for 6 in 18.2 overs.
Australia Take Early Advantage
The victory gives Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series and continues their positive momentum following the ODI series finale.
Bangladesh will now look to bounce back in the second T20I, scheduled to be played on Friday.
