For the first time in the 19-year history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) season concluded without legendary wicketkeeper-batter Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepping onto the field. While the 45-year-old icon from Ranchi traveled extensively with the squad throughout the IPL 2026 tour, he remained strictly on the sidelines.

This unprecedented benching fueled heavy speculation that the five-time champion captain might finally part ways with the franchise. Addressing these mounting rumors, CSK Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kasi Viswanathan has broken his silence to clarify Dhoni’s operational future.
Viswanathan explicitly stated that the franchise management has deliberately avoided initiating formal discussions regarding a retirement roadmap or contract termination. Emphasizing that Dhoni has earned the right to map out his own career path, the CEO reiterated that the team management remains completely subservient to whatever timeline the veteran cricketer decides on.
The Blank Check Offer: Speaking to sports platform RevSportz, Viswanathan highlighted CSK’s unconditional stance. “We have not discussed anything with MS as of now because, as you know, MS takes his decisions on his own, and we respect that,” he stated. “We would always like to have him as a permanent fixture at CSK in whatever capacity—be it as a player, coach, or mentor. Whatever it is, it depends on what he decides.”
Navigating a Rare Playoff Absence and Youngster Transition
The lack of Dhoni’s on-field leadership was deeply felt as the Chennai-based franchise struggled with structural consistency throughout the tournament. For a team traditionally accustomed to dominating the top tier of the points table, failing to secure a playoff spot came as a major blow to the fanbase.
Viswanathan openly acknowledged the squad’s disappointing run but urged the franchise’s massive supporter base to remain patient. He pointed out that the 2026 season served as a foundational transition phase, introducing a fresh batch of younger talent into the core lineup.
“It is a great disappointment for us that we could not qualify for the playoffs,” Viswanathan admitted during his media brief. “We have had a lot of youngsters coming into the side. We have always known that we need to give them some time to settle down. At the same time, we have to take it in the right spirit when we do not qualify, while also identifying where we made mistakes, how we can rectify them, and how we can return to winning ways.”
Whether Dhoni opts to return for one final playing assignment or transitions fully into a formal dugout role as a head coach or mentor, the Chennai management has made its position undeniable: the next move belongs entirely to Thala.
