A major health scare has emerged in Maharashtra after 18 women in Nagpur developed severe kidney problems linked to the prolonged use of skin-lightening creams. The medical pattern came to light over a two-year observation period, revealing that all 18 patients shared one common factor: the use of a skin-lightening product called Goree Beauty Cream. Following laboratory testing, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that the product contained toxic mercury levels approximately 752 times higher than the legally permitted limit.

In response to the findings, the state FDA has banned three fairness cream products after declaring them “Not of Standard Quality” (NSQ). The banned items include Goree Beauty Cream (reportedly manufactured in Pakistan), Face Fresh Gold (Beauty Cream and Beauty Serum), and Golden Star Beauty Cream. Experts warn that mercury is illegally added to cosmetics because it suppresses melanin production to cause rapid, unnatural skin whitening. However, this cosmetic effect is the result of chemical damage; with repeated application, the toxic heavy metal absorbs through the skin into the bloodstream, progressively accumulating in and damaging internal organs, particularly the kidneys.

To safeguard against contaminated cosmetics, consumers are advised to carefully check product ingredient labels. Avoid any products listing “mercury,” “mercuric,” “mercurous chloride,” “calomel,” or “quicksilver.” Furthermore, avoid purchasing unbranded cosmetics, products lacking clear ingredient lists, or items without verified regulatory approvals from national authorities.
