Egypt’s preparations for a crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G encounter against Iran have been disrupted after local security authorities reportedly rejected the team’s request to stay in Seattle following their victory over New Zealand.
According to a Reuters report, Egypt had planned to travel directly from Vancouver to Seattle after securing their first-ever FIFA World Cup win. The move was intended to streamline preparations ahead of their next group-stage fixture. However, security officials turned down the request, forcing the Egyptian delegation to revise its travel schedule.
Security Authorities Reject Egypt’s Request
The development was confirmed by Egyptian Football Association spokesperson Hossam El-Zanati in an official statement.
“The security authorities refused the team’s request to stay in the city of Seattle as planned after the New Zealand match in the World Cup, and therefore the team’s delegation will return to the city of Spokane,” the statement said.
Egypt had hoped to remain in Seattle during the week leading up to the Iran match. Instead, the squad will return to Spokane, their designated training base located approximately 280 miles east of Seattle.
The decision comes at a critical stage of Egypt’s World Cup campaign, with the team aiming to secure qualification for the Round of 32.
Historic Victory Over New Zealand Boosts Egypt’s Campaign
Despite the travel setback, Egypt enter the Iran clash in high spirits following a memorable 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
The result marked Egypt’s first-ever win in FIFA World Cup history and significantly strengthened their hopes of progressing from Group G.
New Zealand Take Early Control
New Zealand started brightly and looked the more dangerous side in the opening stages of the contest.
Their first major opportunity arrived in the seventh minute when Liberato Cacace created space for Sarpreet Singh, whose effort drifted wide of the target. Shortly afterwards, Marko Stamenic combined with Elijah Just inside the penalty area, forcing Egyptian goalkeeper Oufa Shobeir into an important save.
The All Whites eventually found the breakthrough from a corner kick. Tim Payne delivered a precise cross into the box, and defender Finn Surman rose highest to power a header past Shobeir and hand New Zealand a deserved lead.

Within ten minutes, Egypt completed the turnaround as Ziko linked up with captain Mohamed Salah inside the penalty area. The Liverpool forward calmly finished the move to put his side ahead for the first time.
Egypt sealed the victory in the 82nd minute when Salah’s corner kick found substitute Trezeguet, who headed home to make it 3-1 and secure a historic win.
Qualification Within Reach
The victory moved Egypt into a strong position in Group G and left them within touching distance of qualification for the knockout rounds.
