India clawed their way back into the contest with an inspired bowling display after being bowled out for 233 in the second ODI against England at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
At the end of 22 overs, England were 114/4, still needing 120 runs to win, with Joe Root and Jos Buttler at the crease.
Bumrah Creates History With First-Ball Breakthrough
India made the perfect start to their defence when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Ben Duckett with the very first ball of England’s innings.
The breakthrough also saw Bumrah achieve a unique milestone, becoming the first Indian bowler to take a wicket with the opening delivery of an ODI innings against England.
India continued to chip away at England’s batting line-up, with Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, and Shivam Dube claiming one wicket each to leave the hosts under pressure.
India Collapse After Solid Foundation
Earlier, India’s batting innings promised much before collapsing dramatically in the latter half.
Shreyas Iyer top-scored with 66, while Virat Kohli contributed a composed 65, helping India build a competitive platform.
However, England’s pace attack turned the game around after the 30th over, triggering a collapse in which India lost six wickets for just 32 runs. The visitors were eventually dismissed for 233.
Tailender Jasprit Bumrah added a useful 20-run cameo, providing some late resistance.
Archer and Atkinson Star for England
England’s fast bowlers dominated the middle and lower order.
- Jofra Archer: 3 wickets
- Gus Atkinson: 3 wickets
The duo exploited the pace and bounce on offer in Cardiff to dismantle India’s batting line-up after the top order had laid a solid foundation.
Match Situation
With England at 114/4 after 22 overs, the match remains finely balanced.
India’s bowlers have already removed four key batters, but England still have experienced campaigners Joe Root and Jos Buttler at the crease as they chase 234 for victory.
