The Smriti Mandhana-led India Women’s cricket team kickstarted their tour of England with an emphatic 38-run victory over the hosts in the first T20I at the County Ground in Chelmsford. Consequently, the visitors have taken a commanding 1-0 lead in the ongoing series, showcasing a dominant display across all departments.

Dominant Batting Powers India to Massive Total

After England won the toss and invited India to bat first, the visitors faced an immediate nightmare start. Opening bowler Lauren Bell tore through the top order, dismissing captain Smriti Mandhana on the very first ball of the match.

Despite losing their skipper instantly, India launched a spectacular counterattack. Returning batter Yastika Bhatia anchored the recovery with a composed 54 off 40 balls, striking nine boundaries and a six. Simultaneously, Jemimah Rodrigues took the attack to the English bowling unit, blasting a magnificent 69 off just 40 deliveries.

Together, the dynamic duo put together a record-breaking 126-run partnership for the third wicket. Even though India suffered a middle-order collapse, shifting from 133/2 to 148/6, a crucial late cameo of 22 runs from Deepti Sharma propelled the team to a formidable 188/7.

England Sinks Despite Amy Jones’ Fighting Effort

Chasing a demanding target of 189, England’s top order crumbled early under disciplined pressure. India’s Kranti Gaud struck quickly in the powerplay, eliminating both Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey to put the hosts on the back foot.

Wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones single-handedly kept England in the contest with a brilliant, aggressive knock. She scored a rapid 67 runs from 48 balls, hitting nine boundaries to cross her fifty in just 32 deliveries. Captain Heather Knight chipped in with 21 runs, but the rest of the English lineup collapsed under pressure.

Ultimately, England ran out of answers as the asking rate mounted, finishing their 20 overs at 150/8.

Nandni Sharma Shines on International Debut

While the veteran batters set up the match, debutant medium-pacer Nandni Sharma ensured India crossed the finish line. The 24-year-old completely dismantled England’s chase by picking up 3 wickets for 34 runs in her four overs.
