Mumbai Indians (MI) finally broke their four-match losing streak in IPL 2026 with a dominant 99-run victory over the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday, April 20.
The win was spearheaded by a career-defining performance from Tilak Varma, who smashed his maiden IPL century, and a tactical masterclass by captain Hardik Pandya, who chose to unleash Jasprit Bumrah with the new ball.

The highlight of the evening was Tilak Varma’s explosive 101 off just 45 balls*, an innings decorated with eight boundaries and seven towering sixes. After the match, Hardik Pandya revealed the simple yet effective advice he gave the young left-hander to settle his nerves: “Watch the ball and hit the ball.”

Hardik emphasized that Tilak’s natural ball-striking ability is “something really special” and that the century was an overdue delivery of his immense talent. The captain admitted he was so animated during Tilak’s onslaught that he briefly felt “dizzy” from the excitement.
Defending a target of 200, Hardik made a rare tactical shift by giving Jasprit Bumrah the first over. The gamble paid off instantly as Bumrah dismissed Sai Sudharsan with his very first delivery, setting a tone from which the Titans never recovered. Addressing the long-standing debate about Bumrah’s role, Hardik noted that the decision was purely about making an “impact with the new ball” when the team needed it most. MI’s bowling unit combined to dismantle GT, turning a venue of past struggles into the site of their season’s revival.
