Sunrisers Hyderabad sealed their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs with a five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in a high-pressure clash at Chennai on Monday.
Chasing 181 for victory, SRH crossed the finish line with one over to spare, thanks to a match-winning knock from Ishan Kishan, who scored a composed 70 off 47 balls.
The victory also confirmed playoff qualification for Gujarat Titans, while CSK’s chances of reaching the knockout stage were pushed to the brink.
CSK Post Competitive 180 Despite Early Setbacks
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Chennai Super Kings posted 180/7 in their 20 overs.
Dewald Brevis top-scored for CSK with an entertaining 44-run knock, helping the hosts recover after losing wickets at regular intervals.
However, SRH captain Pat Cummins led from the front with the ball, claiming three important wickets and keeping Chennai from posting a bigger total.
The SRH bowlers maintained pressure through the middle overs, restricting CSK’s finishing surge at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Early Blows For SRH In Chase
Sunrisers Hyderabad did not have the ideal start to their chase as openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma departed early.
With wickets falling in the powerplay, CSK briefly sensed an opportunity to regain control of the contest.
But Heinrich Klaasen changed the momentum with a quickfire 47, attacking the CSK bowlers aggressively and taking pressure off Kishan.
The partnership stabilised the innings before Kishan took charge in the latter half of the chase with calculated strokeplay and calm finishing.
Ishan Kishan Anchors Match-Winning Chase
Ishan Kishan mixed caution with aggression perfectly during his unbeaten knock, ensuring SRH stayed ahead of the required run rate despite losing wickets.
The left-hander found boundaries regularly and handled the pressure situation maturely as SRH completed the chase comfortably in the final over.
Klaasen’s attacking contribution in the middle overs proved equally crucial, especially after the early setbacks.
Playoff Race Heats Up
With the win, Sunrisers Hyderabad officially booked their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs alongside Gujarat Titans.
For Chennai Super Kings, the defeat has left their qualification hopes hanging by a thread, with their chances now depending on other results and net run rate scenarios.
