Ireland created history by defeating India by 34 runs in the first T20 International of the two-match series at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast on Friday. The victory marked Ireland’s first-ever win over India in international cricket across all formats.

After being asked to bat first, Ireland posted a competitive total of 182/9. Although India’s bowlers fought back during the middle overs, the hosts managed to finish strongly thanks to valuable contributions from captain Lorcan Tucker and Gareth Delany.
However, India’s batting struggled in the chase. Apart from Abhishek Sharma’s explosive innings, no batter managed to build a significant partnership as the visitors were bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs.
Lorcan Tucker and Gareth Delany guide Ireland to 182
Ireland made the most of their batting opportunity after losing the toss. Captain Lorcan Tucker led from the front with a composed 50 off 36 balls and kept the innings together during crucial phases.
Meanwhile, Gareth Delany played an equally important knock, scoring 49 runs from just 32 deliveries. His aggressive batting helped Ireland accelerate in the final overs and push the total beyond 180.
Although India picked up wickets at regular intervals, Ireland’s middle order ensured they finished with a challenging score of 182/9.
Harshit Rana shines despite Prasidh Krishna’s expensive spell
Young pacer Harshit Rana emerged as India’s best bowler with impressive figures of 3/24. He consistently troubled the Irish batters and claimed three important wickets to prevent an even bigger total.
On the other hand, Prasidh Krishna endured a difficult outing. The fast bowler conceded 57 runs in his four-over spell without taking a wicket, allowing Ireland to score freely during the death overs.
The expensive spell proved costly as Ireland gained valuable momentum before the innings ended.
Abhishek Sharma fights alone during India’s chase
India’s chase began on a positive note, thanks to Abhishek Sharma, who played an attacking innings of 50 from only 20 balls.
He dominated the Irish bowlers early and gave India hope with his fearless stroke play. However, after his dismissal, the innings quickly lost momentum.
The remaining batters failed to convert their starts into meaningful contributions. As wickets continued to fall, Ireland tightened its grip on the contest.
Eventually, India were bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs, falling 34 runs short of the target.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi misses out on playing XI
Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not included in India’s playing XI for the opening T20I.
His absence had attracted attention before the match, especially after recent discussions around his selection. However, the team management decided to stick with a different combination for the series opener.
Ireland take 1-0 lead with historic victory
With this memorable win, Ireland have taken a 1-0 lead in the two-match T20I series.
More importantly, the victory represents a historic milestone, as it is Ireland’s first-ever international win against India across Tests, One-Day Internationals, and T20 Internationals.
India will now look to bounce back in the second and final T20I to avoid a rare series defeat against Ireland.
