France captain Kylian Mbappe has accepted responsibility for his team’s disappointing FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal defeat against Spain, admitting that Les Bleus were not good enough technically or tactically. France’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final ended after a 2-0 loss to Spain at AT&T Stadium.

Spain delivered a disciplined performance to secure their place in the final for only the second time in their World Cup history. Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro sealed the victory, while France struggled to match Spain’s control and intensity throughout the contest.

Reflecting on the defeat, Mbappe admitted that France failed to execute their game plan against a Spanish side that dominated midfield through Rodri and Fabian Ruiz. The French skipper said his team should have adopted a more aggressive man-to-man pressing strategy instead of allowing Spain’s midfielders too much time and space.

“We didn’t play the game we wanted, technically, tactically. When you don’t do what you have to do in a World Cup semifinal, you don’t win,” Mbappe said after the match.

The Real Madrid forward also criticized France’s performance with the ball, saying that careless passing and poor execution prevented the team from making the most of their limited chances. Mbappe admitted that France were “too sloppy technically” and failed to create enough pressure against Spain’s well-organized defense.

Spain took control of the semifinal after Lamine Yamal won a penalty in the 22nd minute, which Oyarzabal calmly converted. France suffered another setback before halftime when defender William Saliba was forced to leave the field due to injury.

Despite tactical changes after the break, including the introduction of Manu Kone, Desire Doue, and Rayan Cherki, France could not find a breakthrough. Spain doubled their lead after Pedro Porro combined with Dani Olmo before scoring past goalkeeper Mike Maignan, effectively ending France’s comeback hopes.

Mbappe, who entered the semifinal with eight goals in the tournament, failed to add to his tally and remains level with Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. However, he insisted that the defeat was a collective failure and accepted accountability as captain.

“As the captain, I have to take all the responsibility, and I have no problem with that. We wanted to go to the final. We didn’t go,” Mbappe said.

France will now play the loser of the Argentina vs England semifinal in the third-place playoff, while Spain will await their final opponent as they aim to win their second FIFA World Cup title.
