Mexico became the first nation to secure a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating South Korea 1-0 in a tense Group A clash on Thursday.

A costly defensive mistake early in the second half proved decisive as Luis Romo scored the only goal of the match, helping Mexico continue their impressive start to the tournament on home soil.

The victory marks a significant turnaround for Mexico, who suffered a disappointing group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup. Backed by passionate home support, El Tri have now won both of their group-stage matches and booked their place in the newly expanded Round of 32.

Romo Punishes South Korea’s Defensive Mix-Up

The breakthrough arrived in the 50th minute following a major communication error in South Korea’s defence.

Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu collided with defender Lee Gi-hyuk while attempting to deal with a loose ball inside the penalty area. The collision caused the goalkeeper to spill possession, allowing Luis Romo to react quickest.

The Mexican midfielder calmly collected the loose ball and slotted it into an empty net, handing his side a crucial lead.

The goal ultimately proved enough to separate the two teams in a closely contested encounter.

Rangel Produces Heroics To Preserve Mexico’s Lead

South Korea pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages and came agonisingly close to rescuing a point.

In the 87th minute, substitute Cho Gue-sung rose highest to meet a cross with a powerful header from close range. Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel produced an outstanding save to deny him.

The danger was not over, however. The rebound fell kindly for South Korea, but Rangel once again came to Mexico’s rescue with a remarkable reflex stop, stretching out his right arm to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

The double save preserved Mexico’s lead and ensured all three points for the hosts.

Mexico Secure Knockout Berth

The result takes Mexico to six points from two matches, making them the first team to confirm qualification for the knockout rounds of the tournament.

South Korea remain on three points and still have work to do to secure progression.

Elsewhere in Group A, the Czech Republic and South Africa played out a 1-1 draw in Atlanta earlier on Thursday.

Group A Standings After Two Matches

  • Mexico – 6 points
  • South Korea – 3 points
  • Czech Republic – 1 point
  • South Africa – 1 point

With one group-stage match remaining, Mexico have already guaranteed their place in the next round, while the battle for the remaining qualification spots remains wide open.

Expanded World Cup Format In Action

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition to feature 48 teams and an expanded knockout stage.

Under the new format, the top two teams from each group automatically qualify for the Round of 32, while the eight best third-placed teams across all groups also advance.

Mexico’s victory ensures they will be among the first nations competing in the tournament’s historic new knockout phase.

For South Korea, meanwhile, qualification hopes remain alive, but they will likely need a positive result in their final group fixture to avoid an early exit.
