Sanju Samson is facing growing scrutiny after a string of low scores, with former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan identifying a technical flaw in the wicketkeeper-batter’s game as calls grow louder for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make his international debut.

Samson Under Pressure

Samson has managed scores of 5, 0 and 1 in his last three T20I innings, including two matches against Ireland and the opening game of the ongoing T20I series against England.

Although India’s team management has not publicly questioned his place, fans and former cricketers are increasingly backing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for an opportunity.

Irfan Pathan Identifies Technical Issue

Speaking on JioHotstar, Irfan Pathan explained that Samson’s bat face often remains closed while attempting shots on the off side.

“You want to bowl outside the off stump because his bat face remains closed. When he tries to play on the off side, the bat face opens up at times.”

According to Pathan, this technical issue leaves Samson vulnerable to deliveries outside off stump.

In recent matches:

  • Against Ireland, Samson inside-edged a shot onto his stumps.
  • Against England, he chased a wide delivery and was caught at third man.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Waiting for His Chance

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi enjoyed a sensational IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals, scoring:

  • 776 runs
  • Strike rate: 237.30
  • Player of the Tournament

Despite his remarkable IPL campaign, he did not feature during India’s T20I series against Ireland.

Saba Karim Backs Young Star

Former India selector Saba Karim believes Sooryavanshi deserves his opportunity.

He said the youngster’s IPL season was among the greatest in tournament history, comparing its impact to Virat Kohli’s iconic IPL campaign.

Karim added that he expects Sooryavanshi to eventually represent India in all three formats.

Selection Dilemma

India now faces an important decision ahead of the remaining T20Is against England:

  • Persist with the experienced Sanju Samson despite his lean patch.
  • Hand an international debut to the in-form Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose fearless batting has generated enormous excitement.

With pressure mounting from fans and former players alike, Samson’s performances in the upcoming matches could prove crucial for his place in the side.
