Mohammed Kaif Questions India’s Selection Decisions
Former India batter Mohammed Kaif has criticised the Indian team management after teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi failed to make his international debut during the recently concluded two-match T20I series against Ireland.
The decision has sparked widespread debate, especially after India suffered a historic 2-0 series defeat, their first-ever bilateral series loss to Ireland in international cricket.
Many fans expected Sooryavanshi to receive an opportunity after his outstanding Indian Premier League (IPL) season. However, the youngster remained on the bench throughout the series.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s IPL Heroics Raised Expectations
Sooryavanshi entered the Ireland series on the back of a remarkable IPL campaign.
The young opener scored 776 runs while maintaining a stunning strike rate of 237.30, finishing as the tournament’s Orange Cap winner.
His fearless batting made him one of the biggest discoveries of the season. As a result, many believed he had done enough to earn his first India cap.
Team Management Backed Experienced Openers
Before the series began, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had explained why Sooryavanshi would have to wait.
The management chose to continue with the established opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, both members of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad.
However, the decision came under scrutiny after both openers struggled to make an impact during the series.
With India’s batting failing to deliver, calls for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion only grew louder.
Kaif Calls Out ‘Double Standards’
In a video shared on X, Mohammed Kaif questioned the consistency of the selectors’ reasoning.
He said that if the management believed in sticking with a World Cup-winning team, the same approach should have been followed in other leadership decisions.
“If we talk about the best playing XI, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had a place in there; his name should have been there. The logic given was that this is a World Cup-winning team, so we will go with the same XI and Vaibhav will have to wait.”
Kaif argued that the selectors had not followed the same principle in recent captaincy changes.
Kaif Brings Up Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav
The former India batter pointed to the removal of Rohit Sharma after India’s Champions Trophy triumph.
According to Kaif, the management justified that decision by saying they were planning for the future with a younger leader.
He also mentioned Suryakumar Yadav, who reportedly lost the T20I captaincy despite leading India to a World Cup title earlier this year.
Kaif questioned why the “future” argument was used in those cases but not when it came to giving a promising youngster like Sooryavanshi an opportunity.
“When Rohit Sharma was dropped as captain after winning the Champions Trophy, it was said that they were focused on the future. The same happened with Suryakumar Yadav after winning the World Cup.”
He further added:
“If you are looking at the future, do you have a better future than a 15-year-old player like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?”
India Shift Focus to England Series
After the disappointing Ireland tour, Team India will now turn its attention to the upcoming T20I series against England.
With criticism mounting over team selection, all eyes will be on whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi finally gets an opportunity to make his international debut.
His impressive domestic performances and IPL success have already made him one of the country’s most exciting young prospects.
