Former World No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray has firmly denied a viral claim suggesting he charged tennis rival Novak Djokovic $100,000 per week during their coaching partnership. Responding with his trademark wit, Murray described the report as one of the “top five lies” he has encountered in his career.
The controversy began after French journalist Frédéric Verdier, speaking on the tennis program Sans Filet, alleged that Murray earned approximately $1 million over a ten-week coaching stint with Djokovic. Verdier claimed that Murray’s coaching fees were exceptionally high, stating that the former British star charged around $100,000 per week while working with the Serbian tennis legend.
The claim quickly gained attention across social media platforms before reaching Murray himself. Reacting to an Instagram post discussing the report, Murray humorously dismissed the allegation, writing, “I have read a few lies over the years, but this is for sure top 5 ❤️.” His response rapidly went viral among tennis fans, many of whom appreciated the light-hearted manner in which he addressed the speculation.
Murray and Djokovic’s coaching collaboration attracted significant interest from the tennis world due to their long-standing rivalry and shared history as members of tennis’s celebrated “Big Four,” alongside Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. According to Djokovic, Murray humorously remarked, “Now that you have a proper coach, you are winning tournaments.” The Serbian star laughed off the comment and once again praised Murray, calling him an “amazing person” and expressing admiration for his character both on and off the court.
