The International Cricket Council (ICC) has provisionally locked in the window for the highly anticipated 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup, set to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. According to deep-dive reports, the tournament will be played from October 4 to November 21.

The scheduling agreement was reached during a high-profile ICC Board Meeting held in Ahmedabad, organized right alongside the thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 final between the Gujarat Titans and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

The finer details, broadcast loops, and complete fixture list are expected to receive formal confirmation during the ICC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for this July in Edinburgh. South Africa will shoulder the heavy lifting for the multi-nation tournament, playing host to at least 41 out of the 54 total matches across eight elite venues. The marquee event marks the return of the premier men’s 50-over competition to the African continent for the first time since the memorable 2003 edition.

Old Format Restored: 14 Teams and the Super Six Era Returns

In a massive structural shift that has excited traditional cricket fans globally, the ICC is discarding the 10-team, round-robin format utilized in the 2019 and 2023 editions. Instead, the tournament is expanding back to 14 teams and reviving the iconic format last seen in 2003. Zimbabwe will stage between eight and ten games across three venues, including Harare Sports Club, Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, and the newly built Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls. The latter is on track to finish construction later this year, hosting domestic matches before an official inauguration next May. Meanwhile, Namibia will play host to three matches.

The competitive framework splits the 14 qualifying nations into two groups of seven. The tournament progression will function through a distinct multi-stage structure:

  • Group Stage: Two groups of 7 teams; each team plays 6 group matches.
  • Super Six Stage: The top three teams from each group advance to a consolidated Super Six field, carrying over points earned against fellow qualifiers.
  • Knockouts: The top four teams from the Super Six stage lock horns in the Semifinals, leading directly to the World Cup Final.

As official ICC Full Members, South Africa and Zimbabwe have secured automatic qualification for the main draw, while associate nation Namibia will have to earn its spot through the rigorous global qualification pathway.

The Swansong: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Eye Core Redemption

Beyond the structural adjustments, the 2027 tournament carries massive emotional weight as it is highly expected to serve as the ultimate ODI swansong for Indian batting stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Having narrowly missed out on international glory following India’s heartbreaking defeat to Australia in the 2023 final on home soil, both icons have publically expressed a fierce desire to have one final crack at lifting the coveted trophy. The 2027 edition will mark Kohli’s fifth and skipper Rohit’s fourth appearance in the 50-over showcase.

“Of course, if I’m playing, I want to play cricket, I want to carry on. Playing in the World Cup for India is amazing… My perspective is that if I can add value to the environment, I will be seen.” Virat Kohli on an RCB Podcast
