India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer believes the team’s recent overseas tours have provided important lessons ahead of the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Speaking before the opening match in Harare on Wednesday, Iyer admitted that the Ireland tour served as a “reality check” and stressed the importance of adapting quickly to unfamiliar conditions.
India will begin the series against Zimbabwe on Thursday, hoping to end a disappointing run after back-to-back defeats in Ireland and England.
Ireland Tour Was a Wake-Up Call, Says Iyer
Addressing the media before the first T20I, Iyer said India realised the importance of adjusting to different playing conditions as quickly as possible.
“We have to adapt as soon as possible. Because that’s what happened with us in Ireland. We got a sort of a reality check. So here, as soon as we create awareness and execute properly, the results will go our way,” Iyer said.
He also acknowledged that Zimbabwe would have an advantage because the hosts are more familiar with the conditions.
“Their team will be good in terms of preparation. They will have a good idea about the ground,” he added.
England Defeat Offered Valuable Lessons
India’s recent 4-0 T20I series defeat against England was disappointing, but Iyer believes the tour also highlighted areas where the team needs to improve.
According to the Indian captain, the squad now has a better understanding of what is required to perform consistently in overseas conditions.
“We had a rough patch in England. But a lot of positives came out of that. We got to know what we have to build as a team going forward, what kind of presence of mind, awareness, and adaptability we need once we step onto the field,” he said.
He added that adapting quickly will be crucial because several players are playing in Zimbabwe for the first time.
“This is going to be a great challenge for us. Some of us are playing for the first time, so the quicker we adapt, the better result we would have,” Iyer said.
Quick Turnaround for the Indian Captain
Iyer also spoke about the demanding international schedule. He was part of India’s ODI series against England and played in the final match at Lord’s on Sunday. Within just a few days, he travelled to Zimbabwe to lead the T20 side.
Despite the hectic schedule, the captain remains focused on helping the team bounce back.
Iyer Looking for First Series Win as T20 Captain
Shreyas Iyer’s start as India’s T20I captain has been challenging.
India lost the two-match T20I series against Ireland 2-0 before suffering a 4-0 defeat against England in a five-match series, with one game abandoned due to rain.
The Zimbabwe series now gives Iyer an opportunity to register his first victory as India’s T20I captain and help the team return to winning ways.
The opening T20I between India and Zimbabwe will be played in Harare on Thursday, July 23.
