India is set to welcome its first-ever night safari after the Supreme Court cleared the Uttar Pradesh government’s Kukrail Night Safari and Zoological Park project in Lucknow, subject to environmental safeguards and statutory approvals. The project is expected to become India’s first urban night safari, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience wildlife after sunset.
While India prepares for this milestone, several destinations across the world have already established renowned night safari experiences. Here’s a look at seven of the best.
1. Singapore Night Safari, Singapore
Launched in 1994, Singapore’s Night Safari is widely regarded as the world’s first nocturnal wildlife park. Visitors can explore the park via guided walking trails or tram rides while spotting animals such as Asian elephants, Malayan tapirs, fishing cats and other nocturnal species in specially designed habitats.
2. Chiang Mai Night Safari, Thailand
One of Thailand’s leading wildlife attractions, Chiang Mai Night Safari features guided tram rides through themed zones, including the African Savannah and Predator areas. Guests can observe giraffes, zebras, lions and several other species in a nighttime setting.
3. Dubai Safari Park, UAE
Dubai Safari Park hosts seasonal night safari experiences that allow visitors to explore the park after dark under expert guidance, offering a different perspective on its diverse collection of wildlife.
4. San Diego Zoo Safari Park, United States
California’s San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers overnight safari experiences where guests can stay inside the park and participate in guided wildlife tours after sunset, combining adventure with conservation education.
5. Kruger National Park, South Africa
Kruger National Park is famous for its guided night drives, providing visitors with the chance to spot elusive nocturnal animals such as leopards, hyenas, porcupines, civets and owls that are rarely seen during daylight hours.
6. Maasai Mara Conservancies, Kenya
Several private conservancies surrounding the Maasai Mara National Reserve organise regulated night game drives, giving visitors the opportunity to witness Africa’s nocturnal wildlife in its natural habitat while supporting conservation efforts.
7. South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
Often regarded as one of Africa’s best destinations for night safaris, South Luangwa National Park is known for exceptional sightings of leopards, genets, bush babies and a wide range of nocturnal wildlife during guided night drives.
With the Kukrail Night Safari project moving forward, India is poised to join a select group of destinations offering immersive after-dark wildlife experiences while promoting conservation, education and eco-tourism.
