The upcoming India A vs Sri Lanka A final of the Tri-Nation A Series has gained extra attention following the heated exchange involving young Indian batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the previous meeting between the two teams. However, Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige has denied claims that his team deliberately targeted the teenage sensation.
The controversy began after the group-stage match between India A and Sri Lanka A, where emotions boiled over following a dramatic Super Over finish. After Sri Lanka A secured victory, a tense moment unfolded between Sooryavanshi and Sri Lanka player Vishen Halambage, with the Indian youngster seen pushing the opposition player during the confrontation.
Following the incident, reports suggested that there had been repeated verbal exchanges between Halambage and Sooryavanshi throughout the tournament. Some reports claimed that heated comments were exchanged between the players, adding more intensity to the rivalry ahead of the final.
Addressing the controversy before the title clash, Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige dismissed the idea that Sooryavanshi was being singled out by his team. He explained that such incidents can happen naturally during close contests where emotions run high.
“The boys are not targeting anyone or anything. They are just enjoying themselves. In a close game like a Super Over, emotions come out. That’s normal,” Arachchige said.
The Sri Lanka A skipper also backed his experienced squad, stating that the players understand the importance of maintaining focus in pressure situations and know how to handle competitive moments on the field.
The incident involving Sooryavanshi attracted mixed reactions from cricket fans and former players. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar had earlier suggested that the youngster should have faced consequences for his reaction, saying discipline is important for a young player making his way into professional cricket.
The situation reportedly escalated after Halambage approached Sooryavanshi and fellow Indian batter Suryansh Shedge following the Super Over defeat. Sooryavanshi reacted before Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella stepped in to calm the situation.
India A booked their place in the final after defeating Afghanistan A by 101 runs, while Sri Lanka A also overcame Afghanistan to set up the much-awaited title clash against Tilak Varma-led India A.
The final will be a crucial opportunity for Sooryavanshi, who continues to attract attention as one of India’s brightest young cricket talents. After the tournament, both Sooryavanshi and Tilak Varma are expected to travel to Ireland for India’s upcoming T20I fixtures in Belfast.
Sooryavanshi has already created history by becoming the youngest player selected in an India men’s squad, breaking a long-standing record previously held by legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. His performances and temperament will remain under close observation as he continues his journey toward international cricket.
