The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced that The Oval will host the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) Final, replacing Lord’s as the venue for cricket’s biggest Test match.
The 2025-27 WTC Final will be played from June 9 to June 13, 2027, with June 14 reserved as an additional day in case of weather interruptions.
The decision marks a significant change after Lord’s hosted the 2025 WTC Final and was widely expected to stage the championship decider once again in 2027.
Why Has the WTC Final Been Moved?
While the ICC has not officially pointed to a single reason for the venue change, several factors are believed to have influenced the decision.
One of the biggest concerns was the quality of the pitch at Lord’s during England’s Test against New Zealand.
The surface received an “unsatisfactory” rating from ICC match referee Andy Pycroft after producing excessive seam movement and uneven bounce. As a result, 33 wickets fell in the first two days, leading to criticism of the playing conditions.
Following the assessment, Lord’s received a demerit point under the ICC’s pitch and outfield monitoring system.
The demerit point will remain on the venue’s record for five years, and repeated offences could result in a temporary suspension from hosting international matches.
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has since begun reviewing and relaying its pitches to improve playing conditions.
Busy Schedule at Lord’s Also Played a Role
Scheduling challenges are also understood to have influenced the decision.
Lord’s is set to host a packed international calendar in 2027, including:
- England’s one-off Test against Bangladesh.
- The second Ashes Test between England and Australia later in the summer.
Moving the WTC Final to The Oval provides additional time for pitch preparation and reduces pressure on the historic venue’s schedule.
The Oval Returns as WTC Final Venue
The Oval is no stranger to hosting the World Test Championship Final.
The ground previously staged the 2023 WTC Final, where Australia defeated India to lift the trophy.
That match received widespread praise for offering a balanced contest between bat and ball while attracting impressive attendance figures and strong television viewership.
The ICC’s decision reflects confidence in The Oval’s ability to host another high-profile Test match.
Fourth Edition of the World Test Championship
The World Test Championship was introduced by the ICC in 2019 to create a dedicated championship for Test cricket.
So far, every final has been held in England:
