Two people were killed and three others injured in a shooting near Toronto’s annual Salsa on St. Clair festival on Saturday evening, prompting a major police response and an ongoing search for the suspect.
The incident occurred near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, close to the popular Latino cultural festival, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Toronto Police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 8:12 p.m. local time. Officers found five people suffering from gunshot wounds. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were transported for medical treatment.
Police initially warned the public of an active shooter situation and urged residents and festival-goers to avoid the area. Authorities later confirmed that the scene had been secured, but no arrests had been made and the suspect remained at large.
Investigators have not released the identities of the victims, the condition of those injured, or any information regarding a possible motive. The number of suspects involved has also not been confirmed.
A heavy police presence remained in the area as investigators continued gathering evidence and searching for those responsible.
The shooting took place near the 22nd edition of the Salsa on St. Clair festival, one of Toronto’s largest annual cultural celebrations, featuring live Latin music, dance performances and community events along a busy midtown corridor.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over gun violence in Canada following several deadly shootings in recent months, including incidents in Montreal and Tumbler Ridge.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact Toronto Police as the investigation continues.
