Former Indian opening batter Wasim Jaffer has publically launched a scathing attack on the national selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar, following the exclusion of veteran speedster Mohammed Shami from the upcoming international calendar.

The BCCI recently announced India’s multi-format squads for June’s single-test match and subsequent three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan, omitting Shami from both rosters. The decision has ignited a fierce national debate regarding how the cricket board handles its experienced, tournament-winning fast bowlers during the latter stages of their careers.

Agarkar’s ‘Body Not Allowed’ Explanation Branded as Substandard

The public row erupted shortly after chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified the logic behind the pacer’s omission to reporters, stating that Shami’s physical conditioning is currently being managed strictly with the shortest format of the game in mind. “From the information that I have got, at this point, T20 cricket is what he is sort of ready for,” Agarkar reported, effectively confirming that Shami was not even a topic of discussion during the selection meetings. Jaffer took direct aim at this narrative on his digital channel, calling the explanation “nonsense” and a thinly veiled excuse to phase out a proven match-winner.

“It’s nonsense. A guy who played the entire domestic season and took 40-plus wickets—what more can he do? We are talking about Mohammed Shami, not just any player. At one point, you asked people to show their fitness and play first-class cricket. Now that the guy has proved it, you claim he’s only fit for T20 cricket. It’s just an excuse to not pick him.”

Domestic Sufficiency Ignored Despite Heavy Ranji Workload

The core of Jaffer’s frustration stems from the fact that Shami successfully proved his red-ball endurance over the recent winter. After recovering from a prolonged knee injury, the 35-year-old spearhead featured heavily for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, even carrying his state side into the semi-finals on the back of an exceptional 9-wicket haul against Jammu & Kashmir. Jaffer argued that if a bowler can successfully send down over 30 to 40 overs in a grueling four-day domestic game, declaring his body unfit for international red-ball cricket defies sports science and logic.

Shami’s International Blueprint Moves to the T20 Circuit

With the selectors closing the door on his Test and ODI comeback for the foreseeable future, Shami’s immediate playing path remains restricted to short-form cricket. The right-arm quick has spent the last few weeks spearheading the pace attack for the Lucknow Super Giants in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, where he has picked up 10 wickets across 12 games. While the selection committee appears to be transitioning toward younger prospects like Prasidh Krishna and domestic sensation Auqib Nabi for the longer formats, cricket analysts warn that bypassing Shami’s elite experience could backfire on demanding overseas tours later this year.
