WhatsApp Testing ‘After Reading’ Self-Destruct Timers For Messages

WhatsApp is actively working on a major upgrade to its privacy suite, introducing a highly requested feature: messages that automatically disappear after the recipient reads them.

According to media, this hybrid capability was discovered in the latest WhatsApp for iOS beta (version 26.19.10.72) through Apple’s TestFlight program. The platform previously experimented with the feature on Android beta builds, signaling that a stable, widespread public rollout may happen soon.

Moving Beyond Fixed Sending Timers

Currently, WhatsApp’s traditional disappearing messages rely entirely on a fixed timeline starting from the exact moment a text is sent—offering options for 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. If a recipient is away from their phone for a day, they might miss a time-sensitive message entirely.

The upcoming “after reading” option solves this by combining read-based expiry with highly flexible, short-term countdowns. The feature lives directly under the Privacy > Default message timer section of WhatsApp’s settings and can be enabled globally or customized on a per-chat basis.

• Options: 24 hours, 7 days, 90 days • Options: 5 minutes, 1 hour, 12 hours
• Risk of recipient missing text • Stays in inbox until viewed*

*Note: Unread messages will automatically expire and disappear after 24 hours by default if left un-opened.

How the Sender vs. Receiver Countdown Works

The mechanics of the “After reading” feature operate differently depending on whether you are sending or receiving the text.

If you send a message with a 5-minute “After reading” timer attached, the text will automatically delete itself from your personal device precisely five minutes after you hit send.

However, on the recipient’s side, the message remains completely secure and visible in their inbox for hours. The second they actually tap into the conversation and open the text, their local 5-minute countdown begins. Once those five minutes expire, WhatsApp automatically wipes the message from their device as well.

A Safer Option, But Not Entirely Foolproof

This feature bridges the gap between traditional disappearing messages and WhatsApp’s strict “View Once” media feature (which locks photos and videos from being viewed more than once). It provides a more casual window for sensitive text conversations to occur without leaving a permanent digital footprint.

WhatsApp Privacy Disclaimer: Senders should remain cautious. The platform includes an explicit reminder that despite these automated timers, resourceful recipients “may still find other ways to save messages,” such as utilizing secondary cameras or external devices to record the screen.

While there is no official confirmation regarding the exact date public users will see this feature hit the stable version of the app, its simultaneous testing across both Android and iOS beta channels points to an imminent launch.
