In a daring robbery that has rattled one of Delhi’s most elite neighborhoods, a family of four—including a chairman of a major liquor firm, his wife, daughter-in-law, and minor grandchild—were held hostage inside their home near Tughlaq Road on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
The Sequence of Events
The incident unfolded during the evening hours in the heart of the Lutyens’ Zone, an area known for its heavy police presence and proximity to high-profile government buildings.
The Entry (7:30 PM): The domestic help, identified by police as Sushil, arrived at the house for his shift. When the family opened the door, five masked accomplices followed him inside.
The Standoff: Armed with sticks and house-breaking tools, the men “scared” and manhandled the elderly couple and their daughter-in-law.
The Hostage Situation: The entire family, including the grandchild, was locked in a single room and threatened while the gang ransacked the premises.
The Loot: Within just 20 to 25 minutes, the accused decamped with gold jewellery and cash estimated to be worth ₹25–30 lakh.
Security Lapse: No Police Verification
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma confirmed that the robbery appeared to be a meticulously “planned” operation.
“The main accused was only hired last week. No domestic staff verification was performed by the family. He and his associates managed to decamp with jewellery. We have leads and will soon catch the accused.” — DCP Sachin Sharma
The investigation revealed that Sushil was hired based on a recommendation from another staff member. That individual is also currently being traced by the police to determine if they were part of the conspiracy.
CCTV Evidence and Investigation
Police have accessed CCTV footage from the back lanes of the colony.
Timestamps: Clips from 7:17 PM and 7:30 PM show the group walking through the lanes, some with their faces covered by handkerchiefs.
The Escape: Despite the area’s high-security status, the gang managed to flee the colony undetected after the 8:00 PM robbery.
Legal Action: A case has been registered at the Tughlaq Road police station. Multiple teams from the New Delhi district have been deployed to raids across the NCR.
A Growing Concern in Lutyens’ Delhi
This robbery highlights a recurring vulnerability in upscale neighborhoods: the hiring of unverified domestic staff.
The “Lutyens’ Loophole”: Even in areas with gated access and private security, the “inside job” remains the biggest threat to residents.
Police Advisory: Authorities have reiterated that residents must use the Delhi Police’s digital portals for mandatory servant verification, which can prevent such pre-planned criminal activities.
The victim family, which operates a well-known liquor business, has declined to issue an official statement as the investigation remains active.
