Travelling between Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar may soon become significantly faster if a proposed tunnel project receives approval.

The Central Government is reportedly examining the feasibility of a dedicated tunnel that would directly connect the two major aviation hubs, potentially reshaping airport connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR).

A Major Connectivity Upgrade In The Making

As air traffic in the NCR continues to grow, seamless connectivity between airports has become increasingly important for passengers, airlines and logistics operators.

The proposed tunnel aims to provide a faster and more predictable route between Delhi’s IGI Airport and the soon-to-be operational Noida International Airport at Jewar, reducing dependence on traffic-prone surface roads.

Proposed Route And Project Plan

According to reports, the project is being planned in multiple phases.

The first phase would focus on creating a tunnel corridor connecting Talkatora Stadium and Gurugram through IGI Airport.

The second phase would extend the route from Talkatora Stadium to Sarai Kale Khan, eventually linking with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the Chandawali-Jewar road network, providing direct access to Jewar Airport.

Authorities are also evaluating multiple entry and exit points to improve accessibility for travellers and residents across central Delhi.

What It Means For Travellers

The biggest advantage of the proposed tunnel would be a substantial reduction in travel time.

At present, the road journey between IGI Airport and Jewar Airport can take anywhere between 90 minutes and over two hours, depending on traffic conditions.

If implemented, the tunnel could offer:

  • Faster airport-to-airport transfers
  • More reliable travel times
  • Reduced traffic congestion
  • Easier transit for connecting passengers
  • Better access for airport employees and airline staff

Business travellers, international passengers and frequent flyers are expected to benefit the most from the project.

Relief For Congested NCR Roads

Apart from improving airport connectivity, the tunnel could also help reduce pressure on some of the region’s busiest road corridors.

With a growing number of vehicles travelling between Delhi, Noida and Greater Noida each day, dedicated airport connectivity infrastructure could ease congestion and improve overall traffic flow.

Jewar Airport Set To Boost Regional Aviation

The proposal comes as the upcoming Noida International Airport prepares to begin commercial operations.

The new airport is expected to become one of India’s largest aviation hubs and will complement Indira Gandhi International Airport in handling increasing passenger demand across the region.

Still At Feasibility Stage

Officials have clarified that the tunnel remains under study and no final approval has been announced yet.

Technical evaluations, cost assessments and environmental considerations will play a key role before the project moves forward.

A Potential Game-Changer For NCR Travel

If approved and completed, the Delhi-Jewar airport tunnel could become one of the country’s most significant urban mobility projects, offering quicker airport transfers and strengthening connectivity across the NCR.

For travellers who regularly battle long journeys between Delhi and Noida, the proposal represents the possibility of a faster, smoother and more efficient travel experience in the years ahead.
