Trump and Xi Jinping are set to discuss trade disputes, Taiwan tensions, technology cooperation and the escalating Gulf conflict during the high-stakes Beijing summit.

May 13, 2026: US President Donald Trump arrived in China on Wednesday for a three-day state visit amid rising tensions over trade, Taiwan and the ongoing Gulf conflict. Invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump’s visit from May 13 to 15 comes at a crucial time for US-China relations as both countries attempt to ease tariff disputes and stabilise economic ties worth more than USD 525 billion annually. A formal bilateral meeting between the two leaders is scheduled for Thursday in Beijing.

Trade and technology cooperation are expected to dominate the discussions, with Trump accompanied by major American business leaders including Elon Musk and Tim Cook. Officials from both countries are likely to hold talks on tariffs, rare-earth mineral supplies, Artificial Intelligence and broader technology partnerships. Trump’s itinerary also includes a ceremonial welcome and visits to key landmarks in Beijing, including the historic Temple of Heaven.

The summit is also drawing global attention because of tensions involving Iran and concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Taiwan is expected to emerge as another major flashpoint after Washington approved an USD 11 billion arms package for Taipei, prompting strong objections from Beijing. Chinese officials have repeatedly maintained that Taiwan remains the “core of China’s core interests” and warned the United States against strengthening military ties with the island.
