Ministry of External Affairs says oil sourcing remains stable despite tensions in Strait of Hormuz

April 15, 2026: India has reiterated that it continues to source crude oil from diversified suppliers to ensure energy security amid global uncertainty. Speaking at a briefing, Randhir Jaiswal of the Ministry of External Affairs said the country’s strategy is guided by the needs of its 1.4 billion population and evolving international market conditions. He added that India is also engaging with multiple nations to address concerns arising from disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The critical waterway has seen shipping disruptions following the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran. India, which imports over 85% of its crude oil—much of it passing through the Strait—has been particularly impacted. The MEA also confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the issue during a recent conversation with Donald Trump, emphasising the need to keep the route open and secure.

Meanwhile, officials said there have been no recent incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels in the Persian Gulf, and all seafarers remain safe. Authorities also confirmed that operations across Indian ports are functioning normally, with no congestion reported, even as the government continues to closely monitor the evolving situation.
