A major overnight rescue operation in north-western Italy ended successfully after emergency teams freed a caver whose leg had become trapped beneath a boulder deep inside a cave system.
The rescue took place at the Grotta dei Cinghiali Volanti, or Cave of the Flying Wild Boars, one of Italy’s most well-known caving sites located in the province of Cuneo, approximately 120 kilometres south of Turin.
According to Italy’s Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service, the caver was trapped at a depth of around 120 metres (394 feet) below the surface after his leg became pinned under a rock.
Overnight Rescue Involved 53 Specialists
The challenging operation continued through the night and required the coordinated efforts of 53 rescuers from different regions of Italy.
Specialist cave rescue teams worked their way through the underground passages to reach the injured man and provide immediate assistance.
Given the cave’s depth and difficult terrain, rescuers established a temporary medical station inside the cave itself, allowing healthcare professionals to assess and stabilise the caver before attempting to move him.
The Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service said the man received medical treatment underground before being carefully escorted out of the cave.
Medical Team Clears Caver for Normal Evacuation
Following an examination, medical personnel determined that the caver’s condition was stable enough that he did not require evacuation by stretcher.
Instead, rescuers assisted him in making his way out of the cave system before transferring him to an ambulance waiting outside.
He was subsequently transported to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Authorities did not immediately release details regarding the severity of his injuries.
Young Italian Explorer Identified
The rescue service confirmed that the individual involved was an Italian national.
While officials did not publicly disclose his identity, local media reports indicated that the caver is 20 years old.
The circumstances leading to the accident have not been fully detailed, but the incident highlights the risks associated with cave exploration, particularly in deep and complex underground environments.
Cave of the Flying Wild Boars Known Among Cavers
The Grotta dei Cinghiali Volanti is considered one of Italy’s notable caving destinations and attracts experienced explorers interested in navigating its extensive underground passages.
Cave rescue operations are often among the most technically demanding emergency missions due to restricted access, limited communication, darkness and the challenges of moving injured individuals through narrow tunnels and vertical shafts.
The successful rescue of the young caver was made possible through the coordinated efforts of specialised rescue personnel, medical teams and cave experts who worked throughout the night to bring him safely back to the surface.
Authorities have not released further updates on his condition, but the operation concluded without any reported injuries among the rescue teams involved.
