Amir Hamza, a founding member and top ideologue of the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), is in critical condition after being shot by unidentified gunmen in Lahore on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
The attack is being viewed as the second attempt on his life in less than a year.
Details of the Attack
- Location: The shooting occurred near a news channel’s office at Hamdard Chowk (Pindi Stop) in Lahore.
- The Incident: Hamza (67) was reportedly leaving a local TV station when two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle before fleeing the scene.
- Casualties: While initial police statements suggested other individuals in the vehicle remained safe, Hamza sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital.
- Security Context: Following a previous assassination attempt in May 2025, Pakistani authorities had reportedly heightened his security, though no group has yet claimed responsibility for this latest strike.
Who is Amir Hamza?
Amir Hamza is a veteran of the “Afghan Jihad” and was a central figure in the mid-1980s formation of LeT alongside Hafiz Saeed.
- Global Terrorist: Designated as a global terrorist by the United States in 2012, he served on LeT’s central advisory committee and was a key link between the group and other militant factions.
- Role in India Attacks: He has been linked to multiple terror activities in India, most notably the 2005 attack on the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru.
- Propaganda Wing: Known as a prolific writer and orator, he was the founding editor of LeT’s publication Majallah al-Daawa and authored several books promoting extremist ideology, including Qafila Da’wat aur Shahadat.
- Splinter Group: In 2018, following bans on LeT-affiliated charities, he reportedly formed a splinter group named Jaish-e-Manqafa to continue militant operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Current Situation in Lahore
Following the shooting, Lahore police issued a high alert in the area. Search operations are currently underway to identify the perpetrators. Some security sources have attributed the attack to potential internal rifts within various LeT factions.
