German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed support for Ukraine, NATO commitments
June 18, 2026: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has underlined Germany’s commitment to Ukraine and NATO allies, saying European unity remains essential amid growing security challenges. Speaking after the signing of a German-Polish defence agreement, Wadephul stressed that the United States remains an important partner, but said Europe’s cohesion is now more critical than ever. He described support for Ukraine as a key priority for Germany’s foreign policy.
The minister strongly reaffirmed NATO’s collective defence obligations, stating that Germany would immediately defend any part of NATO territory if attacked. Referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Wadephul said Europe must continue supporting Kyiv and insisted that Russia would not outlast Western support. He argued that the war had destroyed any remaining illusions about reaching a broader understanding with Moscow and said Europe’s security would need to be organised with this reality in mind.
Wadephul also highlighted the importance of Poland in European security and praised cooperation between Berlin and Warsaw. Acknowledging Germany’s historical responsibility for World War II-era crimes, he supported compensation for surviving victims and called for stronger bilateral ties. Looking ahead, he said he hoped German-Polish relations would achieve “normality,” allowing both countries to focus on building a shared European future.
