Reports suggest UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer could announce plans for his future as growing dissent within the Labour Party fuels speculation about his leadership.

June 21, 2026: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing mounting pressure amid reports that he could announce his resignation or outline a timetable for stepping down as early as Monday. According to a report by The Observer, cited by Reuters, senior Labour Party figures are preparing for a possible statement on Starmer’s future. However, government sources have rejected the speculation, insisting that the Prime Minister remains focused on governing and carrying out his responsibilities.

The pressure on Starmer has reportedly intensified following the recent parliamentary victory of Labour rival Andy Burnham, who is now seen as a potential challenger for the party leadership. Reports suggest Starmer has been consulting family members, cabinet colleagues, advisers, donors and trade union leaders as concerns over his position continue to grow. More than 100 Labour MPs are said to have publicly called on him to either resign or provide a clear timeline for his departure.

Despite the rumours, Starmer recently stated that he would fight any challenge to his leadership and urged Labour members to avoid damaging internal divisions. The Prime Minister, who led Labour to a decisive election victory in 2024, has faced criticism over policy reversals and controversies that have reportedly weakened support within the party. Alongside Burnham, former health minister Wes Streeting is also being viewed as a possible contender should a leadership contest take place.
