Using a traditional clay matka is one of the most effective, natural ways to stay hydrated during the heat. The cooling happens through a process called evaporative cooling, where heat is drawn out of the water as it seeps through the porous clay and evaporates into the air.
To maximize this effect and keep your water refreshingly chilled all day, follow these essential tips:

Optimize Placement and Airflow
- Find a Shaded, Airy Spot: Keep your pot away from direct sunlight in a well-ventilated area. Air circulation is key to speeding up the evaporation process that cools the water.
- Keep it in a Ventilated Corner: Avoid stuffy or closed-off spaces. Fresh air moving around the pot prevents heat buildup and maintains a lower temperature.
- Use a Clay Stand: Elevate the pot on an earthen stand. This allows air to circulate underneath the matka, preventing heat from the floor from transferring to the water.
- Place Near Natural Coolers: If possible, keep your matka near an earthen floor or a water source. Clay floors stay naturally cooler than concrete, helping to lower the ambient temperature around the pot.

Master the Cooling Technique
- The Wet Cloth Wrap: Wrap a wet cotton or jute cloth around the matka. As the water evaporates from the cloth, it pulls even more heat away from the clay surface, significantly lowering the water temperature.
- Use a Damp Jute Sack: Similar to the cloth wrap, a damp jute sack retains moisture longer and provides a continuous cooling effect throughout the day.
- Fill with Early Morning Water: Fill your matka at dawn when the source water is at its naturally lowest temperature. Starting cool makes it much easier for the clay to keep it chilled as the day heats up.
Maintenance and Hygiene
- Clean Regularly: Scrub your matka often to remove mineral deposits. These deposits can block the tiny pores in the clay, which are essential for the evaporation process to work.
- Keep the Lid Tightly Closed: Use a tight-fitting lid to keep warm air and dust out. This maintains the internal “micro-climate” of the pot.
- Minimize Handling: Avoid touching the main body of the matka frequently, as body heat can slightly raise the temperature. Using a pot with a tap or a long-handled ladle is a much better option to keep the cooling process undisturbed.
