Booking train tickets online may soon become a much smoother experience for millions of passengers. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that a new and upgraded IRCTC website is expected to be launched by July 15, bringing several improvements aimed at enhancing speed, convenience, and user experience.

The announcement comes as Indian Railways continues its efforts to modernize its digital infrastructure and upgrade its decades-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS).

What Will Change for Passengers?

According to railway officials, the revamped IRCTC platform will feature a faster, more modern, and user-friendly interface designed to handle significantly higher traffic during peak booking periods.

The new system is expected to offer:

  • Faster ticket booking process
  • Improved website performance during Tatkal bookings
  • Easier navigation and search functions
  • Enhanced user experience across devices
  • Multilingual booking and enquiry options

Massive Increase in Booking Capacity

One of the biggest upgrades will be the system’s ability to process a much larger number of bookings.

The upgraded Passenger Reservation System is expected to handle:

  • More than 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute
  • A nearly five-fold increase from the current capacity of around 32,000 bookings per minute

This improvement could significantly reduce website slowdowns and booking failures during high-demand periods.

Faster Ticket Enquiries

The ticket enquiry system is also set for a major boost.

Indian Railways expects enquiry capacity to increase from approximately 4 lakh enquiries per minute to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, making it easier for passengers to check train availability, schedules, and reservation status.

New Features for Passengers

The upcoming platform is expected to introduce several passenger-friendly features, including:

  • Seat preference selection during booking
  • Fare calendar for easier fare comparison
  • Simplified booking interface
  • Integrated facilities for students, patients, Divyangjan passengers, and other concession categories
  • Improved reservation and enquiry services

RailOne App and AI Integration

Indian Railways has also been expanding its digital ecosystem through the RailOne mobile application, often referred to as its railway “super app.”

The app uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide more accurate predictions regarding waitlisted ticket confirmation chances, helping passengers make better travel decisions before booking.

Why This Upgrade Matters

The current Passenger Reservation System has been serving Indian Railways for decades and handles one of the largest ticketing operations in the world. As passenger demand continues to grow, the modernization initiative aims to improve reliability, reduce congestion, and provide a seamless booking experience.

For frequent railway travellers, the new IRCTC website could mean faster bookings, fewer technical glitches, and more convenient access to railway services starting later this year.
