Tequila has come a long way from being the go-to party shot served with salt and lime. This World Tequila Day, the agave-based spirit is increasingly being recognised for its craftsmanship, complexity and premium appeal, with luxury hotels and cocktail bars across India embracing it as a sophisticated sipping drink.
Once associated almost exclusively with quick celebrations, tequila is now finding a place on curated tasting menus, craft cocktail lists and fine-dining experiences, reflecting a broader shift in consumer preferences toward premium spirits.
From Shots to Sipping
For years, tequila was largely consumed as a shot accompanied by salt and a wedge of lime. However, bartenders and hospitality professionals say that perception is changing as drinkers become more interested in the spirit’s origins, production methods and flavour profiles.
Premium tequilas are now often served neat or incorporated into carefully crafted cocktails that highlight the character of agave rather than masking it. Bartenders are also introducing guests to tasting notes influenced by factors such as volcanic soil, highland-grown agave and traditional slow-roasting techniques.
The Rise of Premium Tequila
Industry experts believe consumers are beginning to appreciate tequila as an artisanal spirit with centuries of heritage.
Roger Tunias, Manager of Polo Lounge at Hyatt Regency Delhi, says tequila has undergone one of the most significant transformations in the bar industry, evolving from a party staple into a refined premium spirit.
Echoing a similar view, Rizwan Amlani, Head of Brand at Mezcalita & La Taqueria, notes that once people understand the craftsmanship involved in producing authentic agave spirits, they begin to view tequila as something to savour rather than consume quickly.
A Growing Trend in India
India’s premium hospitality sector is increasingly showcasing tequila through curated tastings, signature cocktails and food pairings. High-end bars and restaurants are introducing guests to different styles of tequila, encouraging a more mindful and experience-driven approach to drinking.
The trend also reflects a growing demand among consumers for quality over quantity, with many preferring premium spirits that offer distinctive flavours and craftsmanship.
As tequila continues to evolve from a party favourite into a luxury beverage, its growing popularity highlights changing drinking habits and an increasing appreciation for artisanal spirits and elevated cocktail culture.
