Thailand has introduced a new long-term travel option called the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), aimed at attracting digital nomads, freelancers, remote workers and travellers interested in cultural or wellness experiences. The multiple-entry visa remains valid for five years and offers flexibility for extended stays in the country.
Under the DTV scheme, eligible travellers can stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per visit. Each stay can also be extended once for another 180 days, allowing visitors to remain in the country for nearly a year before exiting and re-entering.
The visa is open to citizens of several countries, including India. It mainly targets remote employees working for overseas companies, freelancers with foreign clients, entrepreneurs managing international businesses remotely, and individuals participating in approved Thai programmes such as Muay Thai training, Thai cooking classes, sports coaching, music courses, and wellness treatments.
Dependents, including spouses and children under the age of 20, may also qualify under the visa programme.
Applicants must meet certain conditions to apply. They should be at least 20 years old, possess a passport valid for a minimum of six months, and provide proof of financial savings of at least 500,000 Thai Baht, which is approximately Rs 14-15 lakh. Supporting documents related to remote work, freelance projects, business ownership, or programme enrolment are also required.
The official application fee for the Destination Thailand Visa is 10,000 Thai Baht, roughly equivalent to Rs 25,000, although final costs may vary depending on the embassy or consulate handling the application.
While the visa permits remote work for overseas employers or clients, it does not allow holders to take up employment with Thai companies unless they secure a separate work permit.
