The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is preparing to open three important Phase 4 Metro corridors in Delhi by December 2026, according to Managing Director Vikas Kumar. The expansion is expected to improve connectivity across several underserved and high-density parts of Delhi-NCR while reducing travel time and congestion for daily commuters.

The new corridors form part of Delhi Metro’s larger Phase 4 expansion project, which was originally approved in 2019 to strengthen public transport infrastructure in outer Delhi and rapidly growing residential areas.

Three Major Metro Corridors Expected by December

DMRC plans to operationalise three key stretches before the end of this year. These include the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg extension of the Magenta Line, the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor of the Golden Line, and the Majlis Park–Maujpur extension of the Pink Line.

The Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg corridor is considered one of the most important east-west connectivity projects in Delhi. Once completed, it will provide faster travel between west and central Delhi and improve interchange access with multiple existing Metro lines.

The Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor, also known as the Golden Line, is expected to significantly improve connectivity between south Delhi, the airport region and major commercial hubs. This line is likely to become a critical transport route for airport travellers and office commuters.

Meanwhile, the Majlis Park–Maujpur extension of the Pink Line will strengthen connectivity in north-east Delhi and reduce dependency on road-based transport in densely populated areas.

Phase 4 Expansion Continues Across Delhi

Apart from the corridors expected this year, DMRC has also received approval for three more Phase 4 routes. These include the Inderlok–Indraprastha corridor, the Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block corridor and the Rithala–Narela–Nathupur extension.

According to DMRC officials, these projects are expected to be completed around 2029, depending on land acquisition, government approvals and construction progress.

The newly approved corridors are aimed at expanding Metro access to areas that currently have limited or no direct rail connectivity. The projects are also expected to create alternative travel routes and additional interchange points, reducing pressure on some of the busiest sections of the Metro network.

Phase 5 Planning Already Underway

While work on Phase 4 continues, DMRC has already started preparing for Phase 5 expansion. The agency has identified several new corridors under Phase 5(A), including RK Ashram Marg–Indraprastha, Aerocity–IGI Airport Terminal 1 and Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj.

DMRC has set a tentative completion target of 2028 for these routes.

In addition, detailed project reports have been prepared for seven more proposed corridors under Phase 5(B). These include routes such as Dhansa Bus Stand–Nangloi, Central Secretariat–Kishangarh, Samaypur Badli–Narela DDA Sports Complex, Kirti Nagar–Palam and Jor Bagh–Mithapur.

The proposed Phase 5(B) network is expected to cover around 97 kilometres across Delhi and focus mainly on areas that remain outside the current Metro grid.

Focus on Better Connectivity and Reduced Congestion

DMRC officials say the long-term expansion strategy is designed to improve public transport access in underserved regions while also strengthening interchange facilities across the network.

The agency believes the new corridors will help reduce road congestion, lower travel times and provide more seamless travel options for commuters moving across Delhi-NCR.

Several parts of outer Delhi and developing residential zones are expected to benefit significantly once these new lines become operational.

Earlier Phase 4 Sections Already Opened

Some parts of the Phase 4 network have already become operational over the past two years. The Janakpuri West–Krishna Park Extension stretch of the Magenta Line opened in January 2025, while the Majlis Park–Maujpur corridor on the Pink Line became operational in March 2026.

Another section connecting Majlis Park and Deepali Chowk has also been completed as part of the ongoing expansion work.

DMRC is now focusing on completing the remaining priority sections before the end of 2026.
