The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a widespread weather alert warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across several parts of the country. The adverse weather conditions are expected to impact daily life, transportation, and agricultural activities in multiple regions.

According to the latest forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by wind speeds of up to 80-90 kmph may occur in several states, increasing the risk of tree uprooting, damage to infrastructure, and disruption of road and rail traffic.

Strong Winds and Lightning Pose Safety Concerns

Meteorologists have warned that high-velocity winds could create dangerous conditions, particularly during outdoor travel. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary movement during thunderstorms, and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Lightning activity is also expected to intensify in some areas, posing additional risks to people working outdoors, especially farmers and labourers.

Monsoon Activity Intensifies in Eastern India

The IMD has reported active southwest monsoon conditions over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, which are expected to bring sustained rainfall over the coming week.

Heavy rain is likely in districts including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar. Some isolated locations may experience very heavy rainfall around June 16 and 17.

Thunderstorm activity is also expected across southern districts of West Bengal as the monsoon advances further into the region.

Relief Expected in Kolkata

Kolkata residents may experience comparatively cooler weather conditions as rainfall activity helps bring down temperatures. Recent days have seen high humidity and uncomfortable heat across the city, and the expected showers are likely to provide some relief.

Advisory for Farmers and Fishermen

Authorities have urged farmers to take precautions to protect standing crops, agricultural equipment, and livestock from strong winds and heavy rain.

Fishermen have also been advised to closely monitor weather updates and avoid venturing into unsafe waters during periods of rough weather.

Safety Tips During Thunderstorms

  • Stay indoors during lightning and thunderstorm activity.
  • Avoid standing under trees or near electric poles.
  • Unplug electronic devices during severe weather.
  • Keep emergency supplies and mobile phones charged.
  • Follow official weather advisories and local administration updates.
  • Farmers should postpone field work during lightning-prone periods.

With monsoon activity strengthening across several regions, weather officials continue to monitor the situation closely and advise residents to remain alert over the coming days.
