If your summer travel plans include Kerala’s backwaters, the hill stations of Karnataka, or the beaches of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, it may be time to reconsider your itinerary or prepare for wet weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall across several parts of South and East India, with conditions expected to intensify over the coming days.
Kerala and Mahe Set for Widespread Rainfall
Kerala and Mahe are likely to witness widespread rainfall between May 16 and May 22, with particularly heavy showers forecast on May 16 and 17. The IMD has also indicated that the southwest monsoon could arrive in Kerala around May 26, which is earlier than the typical onset period, potentially extending pre-monsoon rain activity across the region.
Windy Conditions Along Coastal Regions
Strong winds and squally weather are expected along Kerala’s coast and Lakshadweep, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph. Authorities have advised caution for sea travel and warned of rough sea conditions that may disrupt ferry services and coastal tourism activities.
Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Also on Alert
Tourist destinations in South Interior Karnataka, including popular hill regions such as Coorg and Chikmagalur, are likely to experience heavy rainfall between May 16 and 18. In neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, isolated heavy showers are also expected during May 16 and 17, which could affect local travel and outdoor plans.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands Under Heavy Rain Warning
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands, a popular summer getaway, are expected to see heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 16 and 17, with wet conditions likely to persist through the week. The IMD has cautioned travellers about possible disruptions due to reduced visibility, waterlogging, and rough sea conditions.
Travel Advisory Issued for Tourists
The IMD has advised travellers heading to affected regions to stay updated with local weather forecasts, avoid flood-prone areas, and exercise caution near coastal zones during strong winds. Delays in transport, road disruptions, and intermittent flooding are also possible in several regions.
