The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has responded for the first time to the growing debate surrounding teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s delayed India debut. BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla backed the team management’s decision, stating that the 15-year-old batting prodigy will receive his opportunity when the time is right.
Vaibhav earned his maiden senior India call-up after a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, where he amassed 776 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 237.31. Despite his outstanding performances, the young left-hander has remained on the sidelines, missing out on playing opportunities during the T20I series against Ireland and the rain-affected opening match against England.
Addressing the criticism directed at the team management, Rajeev Shukla urged fans and experts to trust the judgment of the coaching staff. “He is a very talented player and proved his ability during the IPL. I have seen several comments against the team management and coaches, but I want to make it very clear that the coach and captain will make the final decision. Whenever the right opportunity arises, they will definitely give him his chance,” Shukla said.
He further emphasized that such decisions should be left to the discretion of the team management, adding that unnecessary criticism is unwarranted. His remarks come as several former cricketers have questioned why one of India’s brightest young talents has yet to make his international debut.
The current Indian team management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer, has opted to continue with the established opening trio of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. The combination played a key role in India’s successful T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, with the management maintaining that consistency remains their priority.
The chorus demanding Vaibhav’s inclusion has continued to grow, with legendary cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri and Mohammad Kaif all backing the youngster for an immediate opportunity. However, India bowling coach Morne Morkel recently explained that dropping proven performers is not a straightforward decision.
Morkel stressed that the coaching staff wants to reward players who have delivered in major tournaments and avoid making unnecessary changes to the batting order. While acknowledging that Vaibhav is “knocking on the door,” he reiterated that patience is essential and that the youngster’s opportunity will arrive in due course.
With expectations continuing to rise, all eyes will now be on India’s upcoming matches to see whether the teenage sensation finally receives his much-awaited international debut.
