England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been omitted from England’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand as an investigation into their alleged involvement in a nightclub incident continues.
The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Wednesday that both players would not be available for selection while inquiries are ongoing. In Stokes’ absence, senior batter Joe Root has been appointed interim captain for the second Test, which is scheduled to be played at The Oval from June 17 to June 21.
ECB Confirms Decision
In an official statement, the ECB said:
“The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) can confirm that, given the ongoing investigation, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have not been made available for selection for the Rothesay second Test against New Zealand, which starts at the Kia Oval on Wednesday, June 17. Joe Root will lead the team as Interim Captain.”
The board has not provided further details regarding the investigation but reiterated that the matter remains under review.
What Is The Alleged Incident?
According to reports, Stokes and Atkinson were allegedly involved in an incident at a nightclub during the early hours of Monday, shortly after England secured a 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s.
Reports suggest that a rugby player was also allegedly involved in the incident. However, no official findings have been released, and the ECB has only confirmed that it is investigating a potential breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the opening Test.
The alleged incident has generated significant attention in English cricket circles, particularly because it involves the national team’s captain during a crucial Test series.
Joe Root To Lead England
With Stokes unavailable, former England captain Joe Root will once again take charge of the side. Root remains one of England’s most experienced players and has previously captained the team in more than 60 Test matches.
His appointment ensures continuity as England look to build on their strong performance in the first Test and take a 2-0 lead in the series against New Zealand.
Jofra Archer Returns To Squad
England have also made changes to the squad by including fast bowler Jofra Archer and batter Jordan Cox.
Archer’s return will be closely watched as England continue to manage the pace bowler’s workload following multiple injury setbacks in recent years.
Reports Suggest Uncertainty Over Stokes’ Future
A report by TalkSport claimed that Stokes could consider stepping down from the captaincy and may even contemplate retirement. However, neither Stokes nor the ECB has made any official comment regarding such speculation.
For now, the focus remains on the ongoing investigation and England’s preparations for the second Test against New Zealand.
