India’s newest spin prodigy, Manav Suthar, announced his arrival on the international stage with a breathtaking display of left-arm orthodox bowling. Playing in his maiden Test match against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, the 23-year-old completely dismantled the opposition’s batting order.

Suthar’s phenomenal spell of 6/33 bundled out the visitors for a meager 152 in their first innings, putting India firmly in the driver’s seat.

Re-Writing the Record Books on Debut

Suthar’s masterclass in spin bowling did more than just hand India a massive tactical advantage it etched his name straight into the history books of Indian cricket. By registering figures of 6/33, he now holds the record for the second-best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in a debut Test innings.

The young spinner surged past legendary names like Abid Ali and Dilip Doshi on the all-time list, falling short only of Narendra Hirwani’s historic 1988 exploit against the West Indies.

Ending a 21st-Century Drought

Beyond the all-time leaderboard, Suthar’s performance broke a long-standing dry spell for Indian spin bowling. He has become only the second Indian cricketer in the 21st century to claim a five-wicket haul (and subsequently a six-fer) in the very first innings of his debut Test.

While legendary modern-day icons like Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, and Axar Patel all famously claimed five-wicket hauls on their Test debuts, their milestones were achieved during the second innings of those matches. The only other Indian bowler to take a debut five-wicket haul in the first innings since the turn of the millennium was leg-spinner Amit Mishra, who took 5/71 against Australia back in 2008.

Match Situation: Backed by Suthar’s incredible control, drift, and deceptive turn, the Indian team capitalised heavily on a surface offering early assistance to the spinners. With Afghanistan collapsing for 152, India’s batsmen will look to build a monumental first-innings lead as the pitch continues to wear down.
