India produced a commanding all-round performance to thrash the Netherlands by 95 runs in the Women’s T20 World Cup in Leeds on Wednesday, with opening batters Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma starring in a record-breaking batting display.

The Indian openers laid the foundation for a massive total, helping India post 209/5 — the team’s highest score in Women’s T20 World Cup history. In response, the Netherlands never looked in contention and were bowled out for 114 in 17.3 overs, handing India a comprehensive victory ahead of a crucial clash against South Africa.

Mandhana and Shafali Set the Tone

After being invited to bat first, India got off to a flying start thanks to an explosive opening partnership between Mandhana and Shafali.

Mandhana continued her rich vein of form, smashing 74 runs off just 47 deliveries, while Shafali struck a brisk 55 from 38 balls. The pair added 115 runs in only 70 balls, dismantling the Dutch bowling attack and ensuring India maintained control throughout the innings.

Shafali was the more aggressive batter during the powerplay as India raced to 59 runs in the first six overs. The explosive opener punished anything loose, with her lofted drive over extra cover emerging as one of the standout shots of the innings.

As the innings progressed, Mandhana took over. The left-hander displayed her trademark elegance and aggression, repeatedly stepping out against both pace and spin. She particularly targeted the Dutch attack in the middle overs, collecting four boundaries in successive deliveries during the 15th over.

Dutch Bowlers Struggle for Control

The Netherlands found it difficult to contain India’s batting lineup as their bowlers repeatedly missed their lengths and lines.

Captain Babette de Leede was forced into frequent bowling changes as India’s openers dominated proceedings. The pressure was evident when Myrthe van den Raad conceded six wides in a single over during the powerplay.

Although both openers eventually departed, India maintained momentum through useful contributions from the middle and lower order.

While Jemimah Rodrigues and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur could not fully capitalize at the death, late cameos from Richa Ghosh (20 off 8 balls) and Deepti Sharma (10 off 2 balls) helped India surpass the 200-run mark and register a tournament-record total.

India Bowlers Dominate the Chase

Chasing 210, the Netherlands never managed to build meaningful partnerships despite brief resistance from captain de Leede, who scored 28 off 27 balls, and Sterre Kallis, who contributed 18 from 13 deliveries.

India struck early when Women’s T20 World Cup debutant Nandani Sharma claimed her maiden ICC wicket, dismissing opener Heather Siegers. Deepti Sharma followed up by removing Phebe Molkenboer, leaving the Netherlands under pressure.

Although de Leede and Kallis attempted a recovery with some attacking strokes, India quickly regained control.

Kallis was bowled by Shafali after misreading the line, while de Leede was stumped after charging down the track against Nandani.

Shree Charani Spins a Web

India’s spin attack proved too strong for the Dutch middle and lower order.

Left-arm spinner Shree Charani wreaked havoc through the latter stages of the innings, consistently troubling the batters with her accuracy and variations. She nearly completed a hat-trick during the 17th over and played a major role in wrapping up the chase.

The Netherlands’ batting lineup collapsed rapidly once the key wickets fell, with India comfortably sealing victory by a massive margin.

Injury Concern for India

The only worrying moment for India came when off-spinner Shreyanka Patil suffered an ankle injury while fielding. The youngster twisted her ankle while attempting to stop the ball and had to be stretchered off the field.

The extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed, and India will hope she recovers quickly before their next match.

India Eye Tough South Africa Challenge

With two valuable points secured and confidence soaring after a dominant performance, India now turn their attention to a significantly tougher test against South Africa Women’s Cricket Team in Manchester on June 21.

The emphatic win not only boosted India’s campaign but also showcased the batting firepower that could make them serious contenders for the Women’s T20 World Cup title.
